Even in an era when grotesque anecdotes constantly litter the evening news, the tale of Maine preadolescent Josh Osborne waxed bizarre enough to turn the heads of the most jaded. From early childhood, young Josh worshipped the rural environment that ensconced him -- and gazed toward a seemingly bright future promised to him by his father, that involved inheriting the family dairy farm. When Mr. Osborne unexpectedly died, however, and Josh's mom ignored her late husband's promise by announcing plans to sell the farm, young Josh felt his heart break, and decided to take matters into his own hands -- with the help of the family rifle. With his documentary Knee Deep, filmmaker Michael Chandler etches out a resonant and darkly comic glimpse of what happened when a young man foresaw the destruction of his only dream -- and decided to turn to matricide as the only logical solution.
