Popstars could, if one were in a gender-role-designating mood, be described as a distaff version of the earlier ABC "reality" series Making the Band. The earlier program chronicled the career of a "typical" boy band, from auditioning the singers to the first sold-out concert. Popstars went the same route with a girl group -- or more specifically, a female pop quintet. Among the Svengalis who put this musical aggregation together were music producer David Foster and choreographer Travis Paine. Perhaps the series' defining moment was the opening-episode montage wherein dozens of young girls, their skills ranging from impressive to nonexistent, were seen auditioning with the same song, "I Will Always Love You" -- a spectacle described by one magazine critic as "televised self-humiliation." Popstars made its WB Network premiere on January 12, 2001.
Highlights include appearances and performances by: Sammy Hagar; Billy Gibbons; Dave Navarro; Robby Krieger; Stephen Stills; Orianthi; and Joe Bonamassa.
