Conrado, a physician, heads off to the Iraq war. But first, there's happier news: Esteban (Esai Morales) and Ofelia (Kate Del Castillo) get married. Will Esteban's new-found stability also mean "liberation" for Nina (Constance Marie)? She won't have to take care of Pablito anymore, so now she can leave Jess's house. Meanwhile, Vangie (Rachel Ticotin) announces that she and her family are moving to New York, and Conrado runs into an old flame at his brother's wedding.

Conrado's in Iraq and there isn't much peace in the Gonzalez household, either: Nina and Jess fight about the war, and Jess threatens to throw her out of the house. Jess receives consolation from Juana and Nina is soothed by Father Mike while the two try gamely to get some gang members and Nina's all-female football team to bake bread together. In flashbacks, Jess's grandmother, Adela, and her two children struggle to escape the Mexican revolution and head north with the aid of their "magic compass."

Esteban also encounters a "cholo" named Shady (Jesse Borrego) from his gangbanger days.

Flashbacks recall pivotal moments in the lives of Estaban, Shady, Conrado and Alicia, and a telling moment in Gonzalez-family history.

And in 1917, Adela, Roberto and Evangelina are being held captive by gun runners, but the good news is that they're close to the U.S. border.

Awakened from a Korean War nightmare, Jess sees the ghost of his grandmother Adela. "The night sun," she tells him. "It has come again." In Iraq, meanwhile, Conrado and Yasmin arrive in Baghdad during a dust storm, while, in flashbacks, Roberto carries out his mission for the Chinese bandit.
