A wagon train crossing the plains comes across the remains of other wagon trains that have been attacked by looters. Soon they too are attacked.

Ritter is in pursuit of Howes, a fugitive gang leader who's broken loose from the Kansas penitentiary in order to wreak havoc in the West. Ritter gets his man by tricking him into hijacking a coach carrying a $30,000 gold shipment and then ambushing him. Along the way, he croons a couple of ballads.
