Vampire Wars: Battle for the Universe Reviews

Reviewed By: Jeremy Wheeler

Well isn't this a piece of work -- Vampire Wars: Battle for the Universe not only wows with its corny title, but for its guts to mix numerous rip-off concepts into one bloody, low-budgeted sci-fi casserole that's high in cheese and low in originality. In what seems to have been a rejected TV pilot, this junker of a flick channels everything from Aliens to the Andromeda cable series as it creates its own team of heroes who travel space fighting clans of vampires named -- get this -- "Leatherfaces" and "Vorhees!" Those facts alone should tell viewers everything they need to know about the quality of this clunker. The good news is that the flick is filled with unintentional laughs that propel it far past most of its straight-to-DVD contemporaries; take for instance, the hilarious Guido Sarducci-like talking slug or the mind-sex scene, which would have been a cop-out if it weren't so outlandish. Then there's Michael Ironside, playing the crazy-fanged villain in such a gloriously over-the-top fashion that it's hard not to love him. Viewers who get a kick out of no-budgeted sci-fi trash will find lots to enjoy here, even if it clocks in around ten minutes longer than it should.
