The Trespasser Reviews

The chance for the millions of Swanson fans to actually hear their favorite star talking and singing was an assured success for this early talky venture. Swanson proved to have a pleasant voice, even when it came to singing. Her performance, which as always required her to display an extravagant wardrobe, was good enough to warrant a nomination for an Academy Award. The story is a tearjerker. Swanson as a young mother is dropped by her husband when daddy-in-law exhibits disapproval of his son's wedding and coerces him away with promises of riches. Swanson does okay on her own, getting a job with a lawyer who makes sure that the girl is not wanting, including bequeathing her half a million dollars. The story is constructed well, though the concentration is on bringing out emotion, something audiences went to the theaters in droves to experience. Swanson was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress, but lost to Norma Shearer for THE DIVORCEE.
