The Shanghai Story Reviews

This rather obvious yarn takes place in the title city shortly after the Communist takeover of China. Miller is the police chief who rounds up Americans and Europeans he fears may be spies. These suspects include a dedicated doctor (O'Brien), a priest, an industrialist, and a sea captain. All along the real culprit is Roman, who has been using her affair with Miller to gain information. She later helps O'Brien and Jaeckel escape, and O'Brien returns to rescue Roman, his newfound love. Proper atmosphere is maintained through the photography and setting, but the story starts to drag and the performances are uneven.
