The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel Reviews

A sequel to THE SCARLET PIMPERNEL (1935) has Barnes playing the heroic nobleman portrayed by Leslie Howard in the original. In this film, the Frenchman Robespierre (Oscar) is anxious to get even with the Scarlet Pimpernel for helping members of the French aristocracy to escape from the guillotine. He has Lister kidnap Barnes' wife (Stewart) and bring her to France in an effort to trap Barnes. Barnes foils the plan and gains freedom for his wife so they may happily return to England. The setting and costumes are handsomely mounted, but the story is thoroughly uninspired, and the project wasn't helped by a lackluster cast.
