This grim social satire stars Vitti as a flower vendor who first falls in love with bricklayer Mastroianni and then finds herself becoming involved with pizza baker Giannini. Instead of opting for one man or the other, Vitti attempts to continue the triangle. However, Mastroianni eventually learns about the other man and goes insane, killing Vitti in a jealous rage. Structured as a flashback during Mastroianni's interrogation by police, THE MOTIVE WAS JEALOUSY parodies the Neo-Realist visual style and suffers from a somewhat heavy-handed presentation.
