The Net Reviews

Shy nerd-babe Angela Bennett (Sandra Bullock) stumbles onto a cyberconspiracy to destroy the defenses of major computer networks, but nobody listens to her warnings. Meanwhile, the bad guys -- greedy cogs in the corporate machine -- systematically destroy her credibility and, through the erasure of computer files, her very identity. A thoroughly conventional exercise in pop paranoia with trendy appurtenances, THE NET has little to offer outside of Bullock's moderately appealing presence. Director Irwin Winkler is as graceless as ever, although the gritty look and refreshingly low-tech action sequences are welcome.
