With Oregon as his destination, Dix makes a pit stop in a Kansas town, foils a raid by the James gang and winds up as town marshal. He's soon pitted against Dekker, a wealthy banker who wants control of the town. Wyatt suffices as the gal who leaves one man for the love of Dix. The old standard "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "Lullaby of the Herd" (Foster Karling, Phil Ohman) are a couple of the tunes heard on the range. This marked the first of three "A" budget films producer Sherman worked on for United Artists. The film earned an Oscar nomination for its score.
