The Girl in the News Reviews

Scripted by Sidney Gilliat (THE LADY VANISHES) and directed by Carol Reed, this murder mystery is filled with twisting plot points and a few stabs at humor. Contributing to the moviedom adage, "the butler did it," this picture has butler Williams poisoning his employer and then putting the blame on Lockwood, a nurse who had previously been acquitted of a similar charge. The courtroom scene, which is nearly obligatory for British crime pictures, is played out with painstaking suspense, ultimately proving Williams' guilt. The movie was reissued in 1948.
