Remick is a European-raised American who returns to her stuffy Boston relatives along with her brother, Ellis, a bohemian painter. Based on the 1878 novel by Henry James, and therefore fraught with seriousness, the film comes off as boredom. Costume designer Moorcroft received an Oscar nomination for her work here.
