The Blue Bird Reviews

This version of THE BLUE BIRD pretty much marked the beginning of the end of Shirley Temple's career as America's favorite tyke. It was beautiful to look at in glorious Technicolor but was not enough of a fantasy to get the kiddie crowd and just too silly for the adults. The plot focuses on Temple and her search for the Blue Bird of Happiness--which she finds at home. One of the highlights is the performance of Sondergaard as a delightfully evil villainess. The film earend Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography and Best Special Effects. An equally unsuccessful attempt to film this story was made in 1976, with the film almost doing to Elizabeth Taylor's career what this one did to Shirley Temple's.
