Romanticized portrait of Sweden's Queen Kristina, who forsook her Protestant throne for Catholicism in 1655. She is tested by Vatican Cardinal Azzolino. Based on the play by Ruth Wolff.

Tedious historical drama set in 1654 where Ullman as Queen Christina ponders the problems of becoming a Catholic and losing her throne after traveling to Rome where she becomes enamored of a cardinal played by Finch. The viewer is not drawn in sympathy to her royal dilemma nor offered even a momentary respite from the film's onsession with historical arcana. Michael Dunn, a talented actor, died during this production and his replacement in the dwarf's role is noticeably different in manner and size. A better presentation of similar material can be seen in Greta Garbo's QUEEN CHRISTINA.
