Spy of Napoleon Reviews

Barthelmess, an aristocrat who faces a death sentence for his role in a plot against Louis Napoleon, is spared when he agrees to marry the French ruler's illegitimate daughter (Haas), lending her his good name so that she can keep an eye on the aristocracy for the emperor. Later, Barthelmess even finds himself working under cover in the service of his country. Barthelmess is pretty bland in his performance, but Vosper, as Napoleon III, gives a realistic and effective portrayal. This costume drama, set in 1870, is based on a book by Baroness Orzy. It was filmed in Britain in 1936, but did not reach US screens until 1939.
