Signpost to Murder Reviews

Whitman murders his wife and spends ten years in an asylum for the criminally insane. Mulhare, his doctor, tells the man of an obscure law that will get Whitman a new trial if he can escape and remain free for 14 days. The prisoner breaks loose and holes up in the home of Woodward, an unhappily married woman whose husband is away on business. The two are attracted to one another, but Whitman wonders what's going on when he discovers a man's body at a mill wheel next to the house. He falls down a flight of stairs and is knocked unconscious; later the corpse is gone. When the police find it, Woodward claims that Whitman is the killer. She eventually breaks down, however, admitting that she and Mulhare are lovers and that Whitman's entire escape has been a plot by the pair to frame him for the murder. Although somewhat artificial, with a contrived ending, this thriller was well made in terms of production values. Shot on location in England.
