Shopworn Reviews

Stanwyck is a waitress engaged to Toomey. His mother (Blandick) opposes her son's marriage to someone as common as Stanwyck. Blandick goes to her friend Apfel, a judge, who gets Stanwyck sent to a prison workhouse for a three-month sentence. After her release, Stanwyck becomes an overnight musical sensation and renews her romance with Toomey. His mother finally consents to the marriage since Stanwyck's social status has been raised. Stanwyck, a replacement for the originally slated Lila Lee, does what she can with her role in this tired drama, the plot of which is riddled with holes. Stanwyck's switch from ex-con to singing star is anything but plausible.
