After MEN WITHOUT WOMEN, director John Ford, scenarist Dudley Nichols, and cameraman Joseph August teamed up again to film THE SEAS BENEATH, practically making them honorary naval officers. This time Ford adds a couple of women--Lessing as the German spy, and Maris as a spy who doubles as a singer at a waterfront nightspot. O'Brien is cast as a tough officer who tries to lure a German sub into a battle, soon learning that Lessing's brother is the commander and her fiance, an officer. Gunfire eventually follows, with Lessing and her German counterparts being sent off to a prison camp. Shot off Catalina Island, the movie called for Ford and his tight-knit crew to enlist the assistance of the US Navy. The group also made use of two submarines and a mine sweeper, adding a welcome air of authenticity to the production.
