Sasquatch Sunset Reviews

Reviewed By: Rovi

What is the most elusive creature in the natural world? No, it's not the snow leopard. It's not a drunk college student's dignity. It's Sasquatch-and Nessy, but she can get her own review later. For now, there is Sasquatch Sunset.Sasquatch Sunset is directed by brothers Nathan and David Zellner. It stars Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road), Christophe Zajac-Denek (Twin Peaks), and Nathan Zellner (Damsel). The film follows a family of nomadic sasquatches for a year as they move through the wilderness looking for more of their kind. Throughout the film, they run into various trials and tribulations such as bad mushrooms and mountain lions, unregulated and unsanctioned log rolling, unplanned pregnancies, and the loss of loved ones. What makes this movie so special in comparison to others about cryptids? Firstly, it's not a horror film. In fact, at times, it doesn't quite know what it is. Slapstick comedy? Family drama? A thought-provoking message about the human impact on the environment? While it is possible to create a genre-bending film with all three of those concepts, this doesn't quite hit the mark. There is too much slapstick comedy timed in awkward places, which takes away any credibility it had for portraying a heavy theme with necessary gravity. An example of this is when they first encounter a paved road cutting through the wilderness. It is a moment which can go in multiple directions. Much like the road itself, instead of choosing a lane, the film tries to carve its own path and-as the movie may have tried to establish-that's not necessarily a good thing. This movie does bring forward a number of questions, though not quite the spontaneous inquiries either Zellner might have intended. What is this film? Does a Sasquatch actually roar or just yell the word "roar" loudly at the camera and at their fellow actors? What is the plural of Sasquatch? How many Sasquatch penises are too many in a 98-minute film? Sasquatch Sunset isn't for the faint of heart. The mountain lion scene is disturbing. There are many scenes involving genitalia, sex and bodily functions from every orifice. Various creatures die or are put in danger. Rest assured all of these are within the scope and context of the scene and plot, but they are graphic. There is not a word of dialogue in the entire film, which does not hinder it. Some of the acting may be a little cringy but when it comes to delivering intention and emotion through actions and facial expressions (only slightly impeded by hairy prosthetics), the cast does the job. Speaking of prosthetics, the costumes work well enough. At times it looks quite believable. Other times it merely looks like an actor in an ape costume. Whether that is due to the costume, camera angle, or the acting, is up for debate. Sasquatch Sunset has the potential to be a cult classic amongst specific audiences, akin to The Room, Sharknado, or the 2006 remake of The Wicker Man. Seeing it in the theater is not necessary but if moviegoers want to see a ridiculous and wild film with their friends, this may be their ticket.
