Sanctimony Reviews

Reviewed By: Brian J. Dillard

This third-rate Seven knockoff piles on the preposterous elements, but its central flaw lies with the actor who plays its villain. Casper Van Dien may be many things -- most obviously a hunk and a talentless thespian -- but a hyper-intelligent serial killer probably isn't one of them. That's a shame, because with neither personal experience nor acting chops to draw on, his performance is more amusing than disturbing. His co-star and real-life wife, Catherine Oxenberg, fares a little better in the role of damsel-in-distress. Jennifer Rubin, however, gives the only truly likable performance in the role of a gutsy female cop. With this kind of by-the-numbers B-movie fare, quirkiness and outre gore can sometimes compensate for the lack of production values. But Sanctimony is as slick as a bland Hollywood flick, only without the high-wattage stars or novel concepts to make that appealing.
