McGraw, an insurance investigator, falls in love with Dixon, an easy-living woman with a penchant for money and the pleasures it can buy. She tells McGraw that she is falling for him, but is afraid that his income will not support her tastes. They decide to marry anyway, but not before McGraw gets involved in a scheme to steal more than $1 million in bills which are about to be destroyed. Complications arise when a postal worker is killed and McGraw is framed. He and Dixon leave their mountain hideaway, but are detoured by a number of roadblocks. Panicked, McGraw drives through the concrete Los Angeles riverbeds. A police pursuit follows and McGraw is gunned down. A classic film noir study of a man being brought down by his desire for sex and money, keenly photographed by Nicholas Musuraca.
