Moving account of the true story of a British aviator who, after losing both his legs, rejoins the Royal Air Force and becomes a war hero. More plays the cocky flyer who, through agony and determination, masters a set of artificial limbs and takes to the air again at the outset of WWII. In the midst of the Battle of Britain, he is forced to bail out of a plane and is captured by the Germans. After he makes three escape attempts, his captors imprison him in an impregnable castle. Handled in an effective and subtle manner, with convincing performances all the way around, the picture is a dissertation on the power of individual determination and courage. Tighter editing could have helped to move the story along.
