Public Defender Reviews

A bank fails and the depositors lose their money. An innocent vice president takes the blame and is sent to prison. Dix believes the man is innocent after meeting with his daughter (Grey). Along with his aide, Karloff, Dix manages to steal some incriminating documents. He finds the real culprits (Pratt, Sheridan, and Gerrard) and frees the innocent man. This is a nicely paced thriller with some fine acting by the cast. Dix and Grey work well together with excellent (and elegant) support by Karloff in his pre-FRANKENSTEIN days. Ruben's direction keeps a healthy balance between plot development and action in a good first effort by the screenwriter-turned-director. The bank failure theme was a clever ploy by the studio to tap into a subject that was on the mind of just about every American after Black Tuesday.
