Prison of the Dead Reviews

Reviewed By: Richard Gilliam

Even within the limited oeuvre of Full Moon Entertainment and director David DeCoteau, The Prison of the Dead is a stinker. It commits the fatal mistake of being a boring movie with enough interesting aspects that you're constantly aware of its flaws. The setting, a castle prison populated by executed witches and their undead executioners, could easily provide the background for a good, low-budget horror film. The screenplay, however, fails to develop any sort of plausible story or interesting personalities. As might be expected, there's a nominal quest that provides a reason why the prison needs to be disturbed. To save money on special effects, the characters are given a good bit of time-filling dialogue. Almost any random real-life conversation you might overhear is likely to be more interesting than the banalities recited in this film. If you're looking for a fun, trashy genre film with sufficient energy to sustain its running time, this isn't it. There is no vision here; only bad cinematography.
