Pie in the Sky Reviews

A fairly moving low-budget independent film starring Bray as a nine-year-old who ventures into Manhattan after running away from the small farm where he lives with his bitter, widowed father. In the big city he meets up with a mean-spirited teen, Charlemagne, who controls all the shoeshine boys and newspaper sellers in the area and cuts himself in for half their take. Bray hooks up with a friendly Puerto Rican kid, Marsach, and the lad is soon selling papers. Soon after, Bray is involved in a crap game with Charlemagne, during which he wins most of the punk's money. After a night on the town, Bray is beaten by Charlemagne's toadies and is rescued by helpful-hooker Grant before much damage is done. Brill stays with her, and the next day she takes him on a shopping spree for new clothes. This relationship is broken up by the cops, who haul Grant into the can for soliciting. Bray then takes the money he has left, buys a bicycle, and heads back to the farm. In an accident with a truck, his bike is ruined. He finds temporary refuge with an elderly black couple and eventually finds his way home, where all his experiences draw him and his father closer.
