Phantom of 42nd Street Reviews

O'Brien is a drama critic and Mulhall is a cop; they team up to solve the backstage killing of a rich uncle. Aldridge plays the youngest member of the acting clan whose Broadway debut is spoiled when it is discovered her wealthy uncle was murdered backstage. Suspicion falls immediately on her father (Mowbray), a successful thespian in his own right who is known to be on the skids financially. Because he's in line to inherit his brother's estate, he becomes the most likely suspect. Through perseverance and plot twists, critic and cop sort things out and justice is served. Workmanlike direction from Albert Herman and a minuscule budget prevent this mystery from rising above the mundane, although the backstage locations help a bit.
