My Dark Lady Reviews

This rendition of Geroge Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion" theme has a few moments that might amuse some audiences. Sam Booth (Fred A. Keller) is a failed Shakespearean actor who goes on the run after being caught shoplifting while dressed as Santa Claus. He holes up in a boardinghouse run by Lorna Dahomey (Lorna Hill), a black woman, and becomes friendly with her son, Malcolm (Raymond Holder). The boy has some acting talent himself, and Booth begins tutoring him. Booth then sets out to help Lorna increase her income, and soon her boardinghouse is a thriving little business. MY DARK LADY is basically a well-meaning comedy that benefits from good performances by the ensemble. Holder is a real standout, a child actor whose screen presence doesn't smack of forced charm. Frederick Keller directs with a light touch, keeping the story moving at a good pace.
