Brady is a prima donna who walks out on the Metropolitan Opera to form her own company. She pulls together promising young talent and enlists baritone Tibbett as her leading man. Tibbett takes charge, and the opera company becomes a big success. This was the first film from newly formed 20th Century-Fox and did rather poorly at the box office. Songs include: "De Glory Road" (Clement Wood, J. Russell Bodley), "On the Road to Mandalay" (Rudyard Kipling, Oley Speaks), arias from Gounod's "Faust," Rossini's "The Barber of Seville," the prolog to Leoncavallo's "Pagliacci," and "The Toreador Song" and "Micaela's Aria" from Bizet's "Carmen." "Last Night When We Were Young," an original song by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, was cut from the film before its release, a fate it was to suffer two more times in films with Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. In each case, it was felt the song was too sad.
