Lamour is a saloon singer, circa 1900. She marries attorney Montgomery and then heads off on a succession of lovers ranging from boxer McClure to his manager Dekker, and finally Kruger, a railroad magnate who takes her to New York. There she becomes a Broadway star until her wild ways finally catch up with her and she is shot. In the Broadway play by MacArthur and Sheldon on which the film is based, the character was a prostitute instead of a chanteuse. But that never would have been accepted by the audiences (to say nothing of studio heads) for a star like Lamour, and the profession was changed for the film. Songs included the title song (Edgar DeLange, Henry Russell), "Sweetie Pie" (John Lehman, Russell), "I'd Be Lost Without You" (Russell), "Ace in the Hole" (George Mitchell, James Dempsey), "Sweetheart of the Blues" (Lester Lee, Allan Roberts).
