The romantic Miles weds rising politician Finch, only to fall in love with Chamberlain. She makes no attempt at discretion, nearly ruining her husband's career. Chamberlain, however, tires of her, leading to her suicide attempt and another affair, this time with duke Olivier. An overly simplified script is the ruination of all the performances except Olivier's and Richardson's--two actors who have learned to overcome poor dialog. At the time this film was made, Miles was married to screenwriter Bolt, which unfortunately did not improve the quality of this movie. He wrote better things--such as LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962), DOCTOR ZHIVAGO (1965), and A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS (1966).
