A stiff adaptation of Bronte's gothic romance, which stars Bruce in the title role, following her from her distressing childhood to a job as governess for Clive. She falls under the spell of love and makes plans to marry Clive, but the plans are foiled when she discovers that he has an insane wife locked in the house. Bruce flees and finds shelter with Roberts, whom she now intends to marry. Fortunately word reaches her that Clive's house has burned down (his insane wife consumed by the flames and he going blind) just in time for her to cancel the marriage with Roberts and reunite with her true love. Remade in 1944 and 1970 under the same title.
