It Had to Be You Reviews

A mostly silly comedy that is saved only by Rogers. Wilde, in one of his early attempts at doffing the doublet and hose, should have stuck to buckling his swash because his comedic timing was virtually nil. Not that Panama and Frank gave him much to work with. Rogers is a socialite who has been married thrice. She is about to make the same mistake with Randell but decides to toss him over. Rogers has had a dream lover (Wilde) since she was a tot, and when she meets him in the flesh, she falls hard. Wilde is a fireman in real life and quite unlike the others she'd known. The usual predictable mixups occur (and there are some laughs), with an overlay of psychological theories (done better in LADY IN THE DARK), and everyone winds up happy. The attempt at fantasy-comedy genre falls a bit flat because the people behind it weren't Howard Hawks or Ben Hecht. Good-looking sets including the famous staircase from HOLIDAY.
