Most of the action in this film takes place on an ocean liner filled with immigrants bound for New York. Ameche is a journalist returning from the Spanish Civil War. He meets Whelan, an Irish girl en route to meet her fiance. She is sexually attacked by Walburn, who is injured as she struggles to escape. He presses charges and she is detained at Ellis Island. Her fiance, Talbot, refuses to marry her and Ameche goes to her aid, almost causing a riot in the process.
