Final Voyage Reviews

Reviewed By: Buzz McClain

Director Jim Wynorski is listed in the credits as Jay Andrews, and it's obvious why he's trying to cover his tracks: Wynorski, long renowned in the indie B-movie industry as a low-budget schlockmeister, has "distinguished" himself with such blood-letting epics as Chopping Mall and Sorority House Massacre 2. As such, he has a rather wide following and is often cited in books about the genre as one of the best in that dubious business. In this laughable seafaring effort he's gone mainstream -- albeit on a budget -- with something that plays like a shuffling of script pages from Speed 2: Cruise Control and Under Siege, but without even those limited thrills. The effects, particularly when the luxury liner begins to break up, are effective (except for the occasional visible wire), but the broadly drawn characters are straight out of Rocky & Bullwinkle and the wheel-spinning dialogue is simply awful. And what's with the thwarted plane hijacking at the opening? It's a nice set piece, but silly to the point of nonsensical -- even a low-rent James Bond like Dylan Walsh would think better of having a shootout in a jetliner.
