Encore Reviews

An anthology of three filmed W. Somerset Maugham stories. The first, "The Ant and the Grasshopper," deals with a man (Patrick) who constantly borrows money from his brother, but who finally marries a rich woman and buys the family estate, which his brother had sold. In the second episode, "Winter Cruise," Walsh is a spinster on a cargo ship cruise whose constant chattering threatens to drive everyone crazy. The crew elects porter Francois to engage her in an affair to get her to shut up. In the third story, "Gigolo and Gigolette," Morgan is a high-dive artist whose wife (Johns) gambles away their savings, trying to win enough for him to give up the dangerous act. The three episodes are engaging and well done, with good performances by all involved. Quite entertaining.
