Die Ratten Reviews

This very depressing look at postwar Germany stars Schell as a pregnant girl from East Germany who has been abandoned by her lover. When the baby is born, she gives it to another woman, who has wanted a child for a long time, but has been unable to conceive. This sets the stage for a conflict between the two women over the child. The acting, production, and script are fine, yielding a very bleak and realistic view of the plight of the German people after the war.
