Bogarde is a convicted murderer in post-war Germany who escapes on his way to prison. He finds his girl friend, Zetterling, and explains that he has confessed to a murder he hadn't committed when he thought she was dead. Together they evade British troops and German police as they search for the three men who know what happened, one of them being the real killer. Quite suspenseful, with Bogarde turning in an exceptionally fine performance.
