Based on the Pearl S. Buck novel of the same name, CHINA SKY is about a love triangle set during WW II in a remote Chinese village under constant pressure from Japanese air raids. Scott and Warrick, conscientious American doctors, make up two sides of the triangle. Drew, Scott's selfish, jealous wife, provides the third. The film concentrates on the love angle too much, and the potential action and intrigue associated with the surroundings go to waste. The most interesting aspect of the film is the strange interaction between Ahn and Loo, the former a half-Korean doctor with Japanese bloodlines, the latter a Japanese officer who is taken prisoner after being wounded. Loo, the ever-insidious enemy, works on the secret loyalties of doctor Ahn to finally free himself and wreak havoc before being killed. These two Orientals dominated WW II films as hateful Japanese oppressors, ever eager to maim, mutilate, and menace.
