The second of Tim McCoy's five MGM vehicles for 1928, The Bushranger is set in the wilds of Australia (though it still looks like McCoy's usual Old West stamping grounds). Taking the blame for an indiscretion committed by his brother, British nobleman McCoy kills a man in a duel and is banished to an Australian prison for the term of his natural life. Escaping from jail, our hero turns bandit, albeit of the "rob from the rich, give to the poor" variety. The plot picks up speed when McCoy's father (Russell Simpson) is appointed High Commissioner of the district where the bandit operates. When he rescues his father's ward Marian Douglas from a rival bandit gang, McCoy is granted a full pardon. Featured in the supporting cast is Arthur Lubin, later the director of Universal's Abbott and Costello and Francis the Talking Mule comedies.
