In this excellent adaptation of the stage hit, Lee Tracy stars as Alvin, a New York City gossip columnist who loves the power of the press. Fast-paced byplay with young Dick Powell as a crooner is followed by a scene where Tracy double-crosses a young chorine. The action switches from light to heavy with nary a moment to breathe. Obviously patterned after Walter Winchell, Tracy has the role of his life with some of the sharpest dialog he's ever had to speak. Ned Sparks almost steals the picture with his underplaying of a woman-hating newspaperman. Sparks made more than 60 pictures and his former jobs as a Gold Rush miner, carnival barker, and medicine show man always stood him in good stead. This was Powell's first picture after a brief career as a band singer. Not much was expected of him.
