Black Girl Reviews

Family melodrama starring Stubbs as a mother who feels she's failed at raising her own children and has turned to helping other girls. A slightly miscast Uggams plays the foster daughter, Edwards and Greene are the jealous "real" daughters, and Peters portrays the father. The majestic Stubbs gives a passionate performance as a woman trying to overcome her faults and weaknesses to make amends for her past mistakes. An adaptation of a successful off-Broadway play, with songs by Betty Everett and Walter Hawkins, BLACK GIRL is a modest but effective film, one of the better black-oriented movies of its day.
