Above Us the Waves Reviews

A claustrophobic but chilling account of the British midget submarines that attempted to sink the giant German pocket battleship Tirpitz by planting underwater explosives on her hull in a foggy Norwegian fjord where the ship was riding at hidden anchorage. Mills and others are taken through their rigorous training for the near-suicidal mission with typical British resolve and resignation. Two of the baby subs fail and their crews are picked up by affable German seamen; the third manages to plant an explosive that rocks the hulking warship but causes fatal damage to the sub. We do not see the Tirpitz founder but it is a fact that British subs did immobilize her for the duration of WW II in a daring September 1943 strike.
