The Winchesters continue their lives as hunters in the third season of Supernatural, though they do so with heavy hearts. After selling his own soul to save Sam's life, Dean finds himself with only a year left to live until he is dragged to hell. Complicating issues further is the arrival of Ruby (Katie Cassidy), a demon who claims to know a way to invalidate the contract for Dean's soul, though it would seem that she has a hidden agenda. Reluctantly trusting her advice, Sam and Dean set off in pursuit of the demon Lilith in hopes that she will spare Dean his terrible fate. Of course, things don't go as planned.
