Question: In this week's issue of TV Guide Magazine, Stephen Battaglio closes his column, "Why ABC Lost Hope for Its Soaps," with the following: "Many viewers will miss the soaps, just as some miss the variety show, the big-budget miniseries and other TV fare of a bygone era. It's the price viewers pay for living in a multi-channel world, where they can watch what they want when they want." Then in your Roush Review column in the same issue, "Stumbling to This Season's Finish Line," you close by saying: "After a season of coasting, let's hope the networks raise their game come fall. It's never too late." Are you perhaps using "never" too loosely?

Send questions to askmatt@tvguidemagazine.com and follow me on Twitter! Question: I have watched All My Children and One Life to Live for 40 years. I watch GMA and stay with ABC just waiting for them to come on to see what has happened. They are an escape from reality with spice, and ABC wants to give us more reality? There are mannnnny other stations for that. If ABC cancels my soaps, I will not watch them ever again any time of the day or night. AMC and OLTL are icons. Regis retires in November and Kelly understands. AMC and OLTL are a part of our lives and our friends. This is a wrong choice that ABC needs to reconsider or I'll be watching The Early Show, Matlock, In the Heat of the Night, Gunsmoke and Walker Texas Ranger, not reality. Oprah's leaving. Put the new shows there, or move the soaps around, just do not cancel them. 40 years of loyalty cuts deep and never heals. Why did they move AMC to LA and hire the veteran head writer just to cancel? Someone's thinking is screwed up. — Mary Alice

I love Hawaii Five-0, but how long is McGarrett's investigation into his father's case going to last? — Melinda ADAM: Not as long as you might think: Co-executive producer Paul Zbyszewski promises that many of the "champ box" mysteries will be solved by season's end, including who or what exactly John McGarrett was investigating and who replaced the stolen money from the evidence locker. "I think fans will be really surprised at how deep we go and how much we learn by the end of the season," Zbyszewski says. Can coconut water actually be used for medicinal purposes? On the January 12 premiere of ABC's new docs-in-the-wild drama Off the Map, supply-strapped M.D.s Ben (Martin Henderson) and Lily (Caroline Dhavernas) pluck coconuts from a tree in the jungles of South America and administer the water intravenously to an ailing patient. Possible? "Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction!" says Dr. Glenn P. Kelley, a cardiologist in Metairie, Louisiana, who confirms that ...

Caroline Dhavernas' last show on TV, the cult favorite Wonderfalls, was killed after just 13 episodes. So, it's not surprising that she wasn't exactly eager to go back to series television. "It was really too bad because it was such a different and quirky show and the fans loved it," Dhavernas says of the Bryan Fuller-produced series that followed a philosophy graduate working in a gift shop where the wax figurines urge her to help people in need. Is Off the Map more than Grey's Anatomy in the jungle? Six years of bit parts in Canadian films and guest roles on crime procedurals passed. Then, while on a beach in Bali, she read the script for Off the Map, a near-surefire hit from the team behind Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. The show was a medical drama set in the South American jungle. "[Going to Bali] was the first time that I had traveled on my own, for a whole month," she says. "That's also one of the reasons why Off the Map appealed to me, because I was on the beach surrounded by coconuts and sand and ocean. I was reading something that took place exactly in that setting and was like...

"Why does fun always have a price?" These are the words of Poor Sue Heck — I can never refer to this scene-stealing character (played brilliantly by Eden Sher) without adding the word "poor" in front of her name — in another hilarious episode of ABC's underappreciated The Middle. The relationship between Grey's Anatomy's Dr. Miranda Bailey and Dr. Ben Warren may not have worked out, but there's a good reason: actor Jason George is moving on to play another doctor, this time on ABC's Off the Map (also produced by Grey's Shonda Rimes), premiering January 12."I would love to [return to Grey's], but I can easily see where the network and Shonda may have problems with that," George told TV Guide Magazine at the ABC TCA party on January 10. Off the Map may seem like Grey's Anatomy in the jungle, especially with executive producer Shonda Rhimes attached. But series creator Jenna Bans tells TVGuide.com that the show will set itself apart. How? Jungle medicine. Map centers on three doctors, portrayed by Caroline Dhavernas, Zach Gilford and Mamie Gummer, who venture to South America to work at a clinic with less than hospitable surroundings and a natural lack of resources. "Here, it's 1952: You don't have high-tech, you don't have big pharma, you have your brain, you have your instincts," Dr. Ben (Martin Henderson) explains to the new doctors after he punches a guy in the face to act as anesthesia in the pilot's opening moments. Check out photos of Off the Map "From the first frame of the show you see that this is not...

"Grey's in the jungle!" That's the nickname the actors on ABC's new medical drama Off the Map have given their series, which will likely premiere in early 2011. But the producers, including Shonda Rhimes (who also created Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice), prefer to think of their new bush baby as "Indiana Jones with scalpels." And after getting down and dirty with the sweaty cast in Hawaii earlier this month, I can see why. The story finds ...
