Fans of CBS' Moonlight have partnered with the Red Cross to mobilize the show's viewers to donate blood as a show of support for the vampire series that (still) is awaiting a second-season renewal. YouChoose.net, a hub for the effort, claims more than 4,000 pledges to donate a pint of blood have been received to date. Moonlight returns to the CBS schedule on April 25 with four new episodes in the hopper. CBS' Moonlight has tapped the so-pretty-it-should-be-illegal Eric Winter for a major recurring role, sources confirm to me exclusively.Winter, who's onboard for a minimum of three episodes beginning with the show's post-strike premiere on April 25, will play ADA Benjamin Talbot, a handsome, self-assured gent who plays by his own rules. Question: Just want to know what the buzz is concerning the return of Moonlight on CBS — there are all sorts of rumors that CBS won't be airing any more original episodes until this fall. Answer: That's assuming it comes back in the fall. And that's a big assumption at this point. I spoke to a Moonlight insider late last week and he/she told me that before the strike, CBS informed producers that they had every intention of picking up the show's "back nine." But since the strike started, they haven't heard a peep about whether they'll be going back into production. My guess? Moonlight will be renewed for a 13-episode second season.

Answer: There's still nothing official, but all signs point to an imminent full-season order — or what qualifies as a full season these days. According to my spies inside CBS, the higher-ups at the Eye — entertainment president Nina Tassler in particular — believe the show has tremendous growth potential and that they have a genuine star in leading man Alex O'Loughlin. (Hmmm, ya think?) It also helps that the show is relatively cheap to produce and it's been consistently beating Women's Murder Club in young demos.

Answer: A little birdie with big fangs tells me that there's an assassination attempt made on Josef (Jason Dohring) in the Dec. 14 episode. Question: Sorry about the USC loss. Speaking of football, how were the ratings for Friday Night Lights? And got any scoop for us athletic supporters? Answer: It averaged a so-so six million viewers, but the good news is it tied for first with CBS' Moonlight in the all-important 18-49 demo. All told, it did about as good as it needed to — and that's about all we could ask for. Scoopwise, Smash is going to visit a prospective college and get a little too cozy with one of the player's lady friends. And Jason is going to explore uncharted territory: Internet dating! I hear his first potential hookup is into some pretty kinky shiz.
Ratings: Moonlight Can't Come Close to Home
Numbers was Friday night's top-rated program with 9.16 million total viewers, a 20 percent plunge from its year-ago season premiere. In a close second was Las Vegas, whose two-hour opener averaged 9.12 mil (just a Tom Selleck mustache hair off last year's). Like Numbers, Ghost Whisperer (8.65 mil) was down — 14 percent — from last fall's premiere. CBS' new 9 o'clock Friday series, Moonlight, was sampled by 8.63 mil, demonstrating solid retention out of J.Love yet coming up well short of underappreciated time-slot predecessor Close to Home's most recent opener (in both total viewers and key demos). Can't blame it on a lack of online advertising.Fox's K-Ville "encore" was watched by 2.6 mil, better than the numbers Nashville was putting up.Saturday's "controversial" Heroes rebroadcast drew about 3.6 mil, I hear, but the actual tally of unique, nonduplicated viewers (to be added to last Monday's audience) isn't expected until Tuesday.

Jason Dohring, aka Veronica Mars' love-to-hate-him/hate-to-love-him Logan, has found another role with some real bite to it. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Dohring is joining the new CBS drama Moonlight as Josef, an ancient vampire. Interestingly, Dohring is replacing 60-year-old Rade Serbedzija, now that the character has been reconceptualized as a young and mischievous hedge-fund trader.Speaking of fall-TV recasts, Hidden Palms' D.W. It isn't enough for CBS to be the most-watched network. At the presentation of its new fall schedule, network execs announced they want their shows to be talked about, too.It's a new version of an old tune. For years, CBS has had the largest number of viewers, but many of them were old and not as desirable to advertisers. Recently, the network has gotten much more competitive for the 18-to-49-year-old crowd that Madison Avenue pays most for. Yet shows such as ABC's Ugly Betty get a lot more ink and watercooler chatter than the higher-rated Two and a Half Men or Survivor (CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler drove the point home to the audience at Carnegie Hall by citing how Betty's ratings have dropped 40 percent since its premiere).With a solid foundation of dependable hits, Tassler says this is the year she can afford to take a few programming risks to improve her share of buzz.
