Um, say what now?

American Horror Story: 1984 has already delivered its biggest twist yet: Sarah Paulson will not star in the ninth season of the FX anthology, Variety reports.

According to the magazine, Paulson "will not appear in a significant role," but there is still a chance she might make a cameo. If Paulson does not appear at all, 1984 would mark the first season of American Horror Story without her. Paulson has had a starring role in every season of Ryan Murphy's horror series, with the exception of the first, Murder House, in which she only appeared in three episodes. But since then, Paulson has become synonymous with the celebrated series.

And Paulson won't be the only notable absence in 1984 either. Evan Peters, who has appeared in each of the first eight seasons, revealed in April that he won't appear in Season 9. As of now, the only cast members confirmed to appear in 1984 are Emma Roberts, who joined the series in the third season, Coven, and Olympian Gus Kenworthy, who will make his AHS debut in 1984.

FX did not immediately respond to TV Guide's request for comment.

American Horror Story: 1984 will premiere on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 10/9c on FX.
