Art Imitates Podcast in Marc Maron's New IFC Comedy
Cult-favorite Comedian Marc Maron has spent the past four years quietly delving into celebrity psyches on his chat-show podcast WTF (wtfpod.com). Starting Friday, the 49-year-old curmudgeon is analyzing himself in the new IFC series Maron (Fridays, 10/9c), a dark comedy closely based on his own life. Brace yourself for his bipolar father (Judd Hirsch), a dead possum, a dominatrix and a horde of cameos by the likes of Denis Leary, Aubrey Plaza and Adam Scott.

TV Guide Magazine: Since you're playing yourself, do you feel as though you have to stay true to the Marc Maron brand?
Maron: That might be a good thing, but I don't know if I feel my personality is a definable brand yet. You let me know when it is, though, and then I can make it a little better.
TV Guide Magazine: Have you ever surprised a nasty Internet troll in person, as you do in the premiere?
Maron: That's based on a real story. I didn't go out in the world and track the person down, but I did do it online.
TV Guide Magazine: Does that happen often?
Maron: It really depends on my mood. If I'm feeling aggravated, then it seems to be a good outlet for that. I should really work on some sort of detachment, but sometimes I can't stop myself. You never win.
TV Guide Magazine: You certainly don't win in this episode.
Maron: Yeah. Some nerdy kid telling you, "You're not funny — go back to your car with your cat, where you'll probably write a one-man show about this"? That's about as bad as it could get.
TV Guide Magazine: Speaking of storylines inspired by reality, did you really date a dominatrix?
Maron: Yes, that's based on a true situation. Not all the events actually happened, though.
TV Guide Magazine: Famous comedians claim to be very competitive, yet you guys are all friends. How does that work?
Maron: There's a kindred spirit running through it all. We pretend like we're not competitive, but we are secretly. It's like high school. Someone gets a low, quick shot at you, and then they're a peach. But it's a community — I think we all know we're in the same racket.
