Legacies Finally Revealed What Became of Klaus After He Died on The Originals

Did he end up in the good place or the bad place?

The Originalscrushed our hearts when its series finale killed off its main character, Klaus Mikaelson (Joseph Morgan) in a final, sacrificial act to save his daughter's life. Now, two years later on Legacies, Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) is still plagued with the guilt and grief of that loss.

So plagued, in fact, that she decided to take her one opportunity with the Necromancer to discover the answer to a question that's been bugging her since she lost her father: Where did Klaus end up after he died?

In The Vampire Diaries, supernatural souls were doomed to wander the Other Side, a dark dimension of lost souls, until they finally found peace. On The Originals, the witches of New Orleans faced a similar fate on the Ancestral Plane, stuck in a pretty tortured afterlife. Basically, there's very few good options on these shows when someone kicks the bucket, especially if you've been murder-y in your time on earth. We can't really blame Hope for wondering if her father's centuries of misdeeds landed him somewhere terrible for all eternity.

So on her trippy journey into the Necromancer's head -- which just so happened to look a lot like New Orleans in full Mardi Gras mode -- Hope asked the monster of the week whether or not her father ended up wandering in darkness all alone as punishment for his wicked ways. Ultimately, the Necromancer revealed that in his afterlife, Klaus watches over Hope every day. He died with love in his heart and doesn't regret his choice for minute, but he won't be able to find true peace until Hope does. Cue feelings!

Hope ended the episode by writing a letter to her dad for Remembrance Day, explaining all the ways she's failed him and promising to do better so that he can one day find peace.

Before he left, the Necromancer also revealed the bad news that the knife all these monsters are hunting is actually one of three keys that will unlock Malivore, freeing it to consume and erase more supernatural creatures. The really bad news? The Necromancer managed to steal the knife and destroy it, opening the first lock. Something tells us the other two locks (and the objects that unlock them) are going to take up a lot of our time in the back half of the season...

Legacies returns Thursday, Jan. 24 at 9/8c on The CW.

(Full Disclosure: TV Guide is owned by CBS, a parent company of The CW).
