How Did the U.S. Women Do at the Gymnastics All-Around Competition?

Gabby Douglas became the first African-American Olympic all-around champion when she took home the gold medal in the women's individual all-around gymnastics competition Thursday.

Douglas, 16, also became the fourth American woman and the third consecutive American to top the competition, following Mary Lou Retton in 1984, Carly Patterson in 2004 and Nastia Liukin in 2008.

Douglas delivered performances that were met with applause in each of the four rotations. She clocked the top score (15.966) in the vaults, the third-best score in the uneven bars (15.73), the best on the balance beam after a wobbly start (15.5) and a 15.033 for the floor exercise.

After news of her history-making win spread, congratulations poured in for Douglas via Twitter, including from Oprah Winfrey. "OMG I'm so THRILLED for Gabby," Winfrey tweeted. "Flowing happy tears!!"

Douglas' U.S. teammate, Aly Raisman, placed fourth in the competition following her upset win over reigning world champion Jordyn Wieber in qualifiers for the finals.

Just two nights ago, Douglas helped the U.S. gymnastics team take gold in the Artistic Gymnastics Women's Team final.
